Mitsubishi pays up

MITSUBISHI'S Australian workers have accepted the company’s redundancy offer in a secret ballot held on Wednesday.

The vote, which found 71 per cent in favour of the deal, clears the way for the Tonsley Park assembly plant to close at the end of next month.

Believed to set a new standard for the car industry, the package includes a lump sum of seven weeks’ pay in lieu of notice, plus five-and-a-half weeks’ pay for each year of service, to a maximum of 102 weeks.

Mitsubishi will also pay each worker $400 for financial counselling. Total costs are being estimated at $100 million.
