Camry due for makeover

TOYOTA'S Camry range will be superseded on October 3 by an updated range with a slightly more sporting flavour. The revised model may feature a new front spoiler with built-in driving lights, clear-lens indicators and a redesigned tail-light cluster. Mechanically, though, the updated variant will be much the same as now. Its 3.0-litre V6 engine will be carried over unchanged - this unit generates 141kW and 279Nm. The Camry will not score the engine upgrades used in the Avalon to boost outputs to 145kW and 284Nm. Toyota Australia's manager for passenger vehicle planning, Mr Adrian Weimers, says the revised ECU calibration and variable-valve muffler used to boost the Avalon's outputs will remain unique to that car. The Camry will continue to use the existing locally-sourced steering rack - unlike the Avalon, which uses an imported item. Mr Weimers says the updated Camry's suspension settings will be revised to deliver a better ride/handling compromise. The model range is expected to be pared down, with the up-spec Vienta variants possibly facing the axe to avoid cannibalising Avalon sales. Comfort levels should benefit from the fitment of new seats across the range. The facelift will serve to carry the present generation Camry through to 2002, when an all-new model is due. This vehicle is believed to be close to design freeze. The next-generation Camry's V6 engine may be equipped with an intelligent variable valve timing system that boosts low and mid-range torque.
