Toyota previews TRD performance parts for Supra

GR Supra Performance Line concept by TRD shows potential bodykit, options for Supra

11 Feb 2019

TOYOTA’S high-performance division, Toyota Racing Development (TRD), has revealed the GR Supra Performance Line concept, which shows off a potential set of aerodynamic enhancements to be fit to the all-new sportscar.

Using the A90 Supra as the basis for the show car, TRD has shown off a number of aerodynamic bodykit enhancements that could find their way into Toyota’s parts catalogue in the future.

Using lightweight carbon-fibre panels, the GR Supra Performance Line concept has increased aerodynamic capabilities, starting with the large front splitter that extends all the way around to the bottom of the front wheelarches.

A side skirt runs between the front and rear wheels, while a door garnish gives the Supra an eye-catching bit of flair.

At the rear, the concept features a bootlid-mounted lip spoiler and rear spats, which help shape the Supra’s dual-exit exhaust pipes.

All the modifications are not just for show, as they also increase downforce, reduce lift, mitigate turbulence and limit unintended sideways movement.

Lastly, the GR Supra Performance Line concept comes with 19-inch forged-aluminium wheels with a mesh spoke design.

The enhancements will likely appeal to fans of the Supra, with previous generations – the last of which ceased production in 2002 – proving to be a hit across the globe on the aftermarket tuning scene.

No other enhancements have been detailed by TRD, such as suspension and braking systems, however, at the bottom of the TRD Japan page where the concept was revealed, the line “to be continued” appears, suggesting more is to come.

As for the engine, nothing has been detailed by TRD, suggesting the BMW-sourced 250kW/500Nm 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder mill destined for Australia will carry over unchanged – for now.

The Supra is set to touch down in Australian showrooms in the third quarter of this year, however, early adopters will have to be quick as only 300 examples of the hotly anticipated sportscar are set to arrive in Australia this year.
