News - Volkswagen - PassatVW emergency services models make debutPursuit-spec Passat and prototype Amarok at AFAC 202324 Aug 2023 By MATT BROGAN VOLKSWAGEN has shown a police pursuit-spec Passat and prototype emergency services Amarok at this year’s Australasian Fire And Emergency Services Authorities Council (AFAC) exhibition in Brisbane.
The Passat Proline, as it is known, is developed specifically for emergency services use. It differs from civilian-issue vehicles in its interior trim specification, upgraded alternator and provision for a second battery.
VW’s latest Passat Proline also features the most recent version of screen integration, a collaborative effort between the German manufacturer, Lumen Australia, Obses UK and Ecco Safety Group.
Volkswagen says there are already thousands of examples of the system in use in emergency services vehicles across the globe.
The system offers users easy operation of lights and sirens through the standard OEM multimedia screen, and now also includes standard number plate recognition technology.
VW says the integration of emergency services-specific features within the vehicle’s infotainment screen eliminates the need for multiple screens, reducing complexity, saving space and improving occupant safety.
The technology is also offered in Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace Proline models, the emergency services-specific variant offering five seats and a 162TSI 4Motion driveline and modified sports suspension.
“Year-to-date, we have sold more than 1400 Passat Proline wagons and sedans, and almost 600 Tiguan Allspace Prolines – and counting,” said Volkswagen and Cupra national fleet sales manager, Regine Zschernig.
“There are no alterations to brakes, engines, or drivetrains (over civilian-issue vehicles). So, aside from the Proline adjustments, the police and ambulance have selected Volkswagen cars and SUVs that are essentially the very cars that the public drive.”
Volkswagen also showed an example of its recently launched Amarok Style V6 at AFAS23, the prototype variant a fire and rescue vehicle developed in conjunction with MFI and Ecco Safety Group.
The partnered body on the Amarok integrates rear traffic alert, reversing camera and sensors, as well as a built-in rear sing board.
VW says the Amarok is currently under evaluation by various fleets across the country, including the emergency services.
“Volkswagen offers an unequalled array of mobility solutions, fit for purpose for all fleet types,” added Ms Zschernig.
“We have compact hatches, a full range of SUVs, a new ute range, and a full suite of commercial vans and chassis up to 5500kg GVM – and we back them all with Care Plans, (a) five-year warranty and (the support of) more than 100 dealerships nationwide.”
VW Australia offers various types of vehicles for emergency service use with models ranging from the Golf hatch to large Crafter van in use across every state and territory.
The AFAC23 Conference and Exhibition is Australasia’s largest and most comprehensive emergency services management conference and exhibition. Last year’s event attracted more than 3000 emergency services personnel from across the region.
This year’s event, which takes place from August 22 – 25 offers attendees access to over 100 conference presenters as well as Australia’s most comprehensive emergency management vehicles, equipment and technology.
