Comprehensively reworked engines, a new five-speed automatic gearbox, anti-whiplash seats, bigger side airbags, twin child booster seats in wagons, more standard features and fewer models marked the Series II upgrades.
Greater engine efficiency was achieved through variable-valve timing.
The base model was now the 125kW S70 2.4 20V, followed by the 106kW S70 Bi-Fuel, 125kW V70 2.4 20V CD, 142kW S/V70 2.4T and V70 XC and the storming 195kW V70 R.
A value-added S70 SE in 2.4 20V and 2.4T versions in March 2000 added many luxury features.
The all-new second generation V70 wagon arrived in February 2000, the old XC soldiered on until mid-year along with the S70.
Volvo called the new generation sedan S60 when it arrived in January 2001.
