Daihatsu’s garish facelift of its once plain but pretty Applause wasn’t well received critically or commercially.

A fake chrome-laden grille, chintzy cabin trim and over-ornate alloy wheels detracted from a comprehensive specification list that included dual front airbags, power steering and central locking. Engine driveability and refinement were also improved.
