Hyundai Lantra

J1 Lantra

1 May 1991

Sandwiched between the Excel and Sonata, the front-wheel drive Lantra was Hyundai’s first true Corolla rival.

A turning point for the company, the Lantra was the first Hyundai with class-competitive performance, ride and handling abilities.

It also showcased the company’s first in-house four-cylinder engine design.

Initially two 84kW 1.6L twin-cam 16-valve engine models were available – the base GL and GLS. Both could be had with a four-speed auto or standard five-speed manual.

In October ’92 a 92kW 1.8L engine heralded a facelift, which included a revised nose and tail-light treatment, and different trim.

A new top-line model known as the Levant featured anti-lock brakes, a driver’s airbag, alloy wheels, cruise control and power windows.
