NF Sonata

ARGUABLY the best Hyundai sold in Australia to date, the fourth-generation Sonata impressed with its pleasant styling inside and out, big quality and presentation strides and amenable – though far from class-leading – driving dynamics.

Two engines driving the front wheels were again offered – a new 118kW/219Nm 2.4-litre twin-cam 16-valve four-cylinder unit, as well as a new 3.3-litre DOHC 24V variable-valve V6 delivering 173kW and 304Nm.

Both powerplants were smooth and surprisingly gutsy. The 2.4 was only available in a four-speed sequential shift automatic while the 3.3’s sole automatic choice was a new five-speed sequential shift transmission.

The latter also included stability and traction controls in its specification, while all NF Sonata’s came with anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution, dual front, side-front and head airbags, remote central locking, power windows, and power mirrors.

The Elite also added leather, powered front seats, parking radar and cruise control to its specifications.
