Spacia SR40

The Spacia Mk2 was a much more modern van than its ancient predecessor.

Quite clearly based on the Town Ace short-bonnet vehicle (SBV), this Spacia eschewed the old model’s forward-control design compromise to the benefit of greater safety and stability.

Backing this up was a stronger body, dual front airbags, a wider track, longer wheelbase and considerably better all-round vision.

Toyota’s venerable 94kW/180Nm 2.0-litre twin-cam 16-valve 3S-FE four-cylinder engine provided motivation, coupled to a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox.

Central locking, power steering, power mirrors and power windows were also part of the eight-seater package. Anti-lock brakes and second-row air-conditioning were optional.

But the Spacia’s Town Ace work van-like utilitarian look put many buyers off, despite its unique nose, wheels, cabin trim, colour palette and high equipment levels.

In early ’99 larger wheels, more standard features, revised instrumentation and better ergonomics were added.

To further keep sales kicking along, the Spacia Value Pack of 2000/01 added dual air-conditioning, a CD player, keyless entry and parking radar.

The model line was discontinued during the middle of 2002.
