Volvo V70

V70 XC (Cross Country)

1 Sep 2000

The V70 Cross Country, the Swedish car manufacturer's second stab at a fashionable rather than truly capable off-roader, was based on the second generation V70 2.4T wagon introduced in early 2000.

Above the regular model, the Cross Country offers a big-tyred, plastic cladded, turbocharged macho-ness while retaining the regular car’s impeccable safety credentials, high quality finish and excellent interior flexibility.

But the overly light steering, unhappy handling and ride balance and thirsty turbo engines are drawbacks.

The engine is a 147kW/285Nm 2.4-litre turbocharged five-cylinder unit mated to two five-speed gearboxes – a manual or a Tiptronic-style (Geartronic) automatic.

The base model was joined by the SE, with extra features like leather upholstery and fancier audio.

A minor specification increase – accompanied by some alterations to the suspension geometry for improved dynamics – was implemented in June ’01.
