JUST how could it be that, in 2008, only Hyundai offers a large diesel-powered four-door sedan as defined by the VFACTS sales registration categorisations? Incredible but true, and that’s enough justification for us to seek out and sample the smooth new Grandeur CRDi turbo-diesel version. Priced at $2000 above the continuing (though also slightly facelifted) V6 petrol model, the flagship Hyundai presents an intriguing proposition for family car buyers. We weren’t expecting a BMW-style ultimate driving machine, but the Grandeur CRDi could well have more appeal than the rather softly sprung petrol version.

Hyundai TG Grandeur
Released: Feb 2006
Ended: Sep 2008
Family Tree: GrandeurAfter the woefully undercooked 1999 XG series, the second-generation TG Grandeur sedan was a much better effort, with its interesting design, lavish cabin style and ultra smooth – if a little thirsty – 194kW/248Nm 3.8-litre Lambda V6 petrol engine – mated to a five-speed automatic gearbox. Available in base and flagship Limited versions, the Grandeur offered a soft and serene, if rather dull-to-drive, alternative to rivals such as Nissan’s Maxima.
