Road TestCar reviews - Kia - Sportage - 5-dr wagonKia modelsOverviewUnbelievably the original Sportage was based on the platform of the 1987 Mazda 12116 May 2001 KIA's Sportage 4WD hits the mark with styling appeal, packaging and pricing. It is also capable in terms of engine performance with a willing twin-camshaft, multi-valve 2.0-litre engine providing enough power to keep pace on or off road. The suspension however still tends to disappoint, even after a recent general upgrade. Unsure handling gives the vehicle an unsettled feel in urban conditions. This is only partly redeemed by the Sportage's comfortable ride. However Kia hopes the revised Sportage's sharp pricing and generous equipment list will keep it afloat in the keenly contested small 4WD segment.
