Super TestCar reviews - Nissan - Pulsar - LX 5-dr hatchNissan modelsUsed Rivals25 Jun 2003 FORD KJ LASER 5D HATCHBACK (1994-1999) THIS zippy Mazda-built Ford has a sweet engine, good dynamics, plenty of space and a good quality interior. The load area will not rival that of the spacious Pulsars but it certainly has more style. Later LXis also scored an airbag. TOYOTA COROLLA 5D LIFTBACK (1994-1999) THE last Australian-built small car really is roomy, even for luggage. The engine gives a good account of itself in terms of performance and economy while the dynamics are on the safe and secure side of competent. A very sensible choice with an enduring popularity reflected in its solid resale values. HYUNDAI J2 LANTRA 4D SEDAN (1995-2000) THE most well-rounded Hyundai, the Lantra is a value-packed sedan or stylish wagon alternative. The grunty 1.8-litre four lacks some refinement and the baulky gearchange and juddery clutch are annoying. The dynamics are surprisingly good and the interior is roomy. VOLKSWAGEN GOLF CL 3D HATCHBACK (1995-1996) STURDY, strong, safe, durable and well built, the classy VW has German engineering and Euro style on its side. But the 1.8-litre four is not as powerful, economical and sweet as its Japanese rivals, plus it needs premium unleaded. Available as a three-door until a five-door arrived in late 1996.
