Lambo’s Lanzador EV not ready until 2028

Electric coupe-SUV concept a taste of Lamborghini’s future, still five years away

22 Aug 2023

LAMBORGHINI has unveiled images of its Lanzador coupe-SUV this week, the Italian brand’s first all-electric four-seat (2+2), two-door model set to commence production from 2028.

Slotting within the Raging Bull line-up as an ‘Ultra GT car’, the model is designed to place somewhere between the Urus SUV and Lamborghini’s prized range of supercars. It develops over 1000kW (one megawatt) of power, and according to Lamborghini CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, is a “concrete preview of the production vehicle”.

With all-wheel drive motivation coming from an electric motor placed on each axle, the Lamborghini Lanzador features a range of supercar-esque party tricks, including all-wheel steering and self-levelling suspension.

Lamborghini says the model “ensures long range” but did not quote a distance-to-empty figure from the car’s “new generation, high performance battery”.

GoAuto understands the battery and platform will share much with Volkswagen/Porsche’s SSP Sport platform, the same anticipated to form the basis of Audi’s forthcoming ActiveSphere.

“We are taking Lamborghini integrated driving dynamics control to a whole new level, which has not been possible for production sports cars before and offers our customers a completely new driving experience,” said Lamborghini chief technical office, Rouven Mohr.

The Lanzador can transfer power front to rear “in millseconds” as required, while an electronic active rear differential can do the same between the (rear) left and right wheels.

According to Lamboghini design chief, Mitja Borkert, the Lanzador is “inspired by spaceships” and draws styling inspiration from the new Countach LP800-4, Sesto Elemento and Murchielago with similarly sharp, angular panels, narrow headlights and 23-inch alloy wheels.

Active aerodynamics feature front and rear while, inside, a Y-shaped centre console separates driver from passenger while hosting HVAC, infotainment, and Anima (drive mode) controls.

Individual displays for each of the front seat passengers offer vital readouts, including speed, while front and rear lockers provide storage for Lamborghini’s made-to-measure (read: expensive) baggage.

Like an increasing number of electric cars, the Lamborghini Lanzador uses an array of recycled materials within its cabin, including 3D-printed recycled seating foam, recycled plastic and nylon stitching, recycled Australian Merino wool, regenerated carbon-fibre and sustainably tanned leather.

“With the fourth concept model, we are looking into our future without forgetting our DNA,” said Mr Winkelmann.

“The first coupes from Lamborghini with their front engines were sporty, elegant Gran Turismos suitable for everyday use as 2+2 seaters.

“The concept for our fourth production model leverages our philosophy of super sportiness combined with brave new technologies and fearless design, perfectly fitting into our Direzione Cor Tauri strategy.”
