2008 North American International Auto Show

Tough beast: Hummer went gunning for the Jeep Wrangler with its HX concept at NAIAS 2008.

13 Jan 2008

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS in DETROIT

The calm before the GFC storm, the ’08 Detroit show rolled out a variety of fresh metal, ranging from the all-new third-gen Subaru Forester, VW Passat CC, BMW X6 and facelifted Mazda RX-8 to the monster Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 kicking out 462kW/823Nm and similarly powered Cadillac CTS-V.

Typically American, close-to-production SUV concepts also featured heavily, including the Land Rover LRX, Saab 9-4X, Mercedes GLK, and Ford Explorer III. GM was still bullish about dodging Chapter 11 Bankruptcy thanks to the 2011 Chevy Volt, but the writing was on the wall for the US Big Three.
