You’re not seeing things: The 2015 Mirage has the same looks but underneath the skin, Mitsubishi’s engineers have refined the car to be better insulated from road and engine noise.

MITSUBISHI’s simplified and more refined 2015 Mirage hatch has arrived, bringing new technical features and a lower entry price of $11,490 before on-road costs.

Its new sharpened price tag undercuts the previous base model ES five-speed manual by $1500, while the price of the CVT ES has also been lowered by $1000 to $13,490.

The higher-spec LS with a manual transmission has had $2000 shaved off its old price to $12,990 while the CVT version is $1500 less at $14,990.

Sport variants have been removed from the Mirage range with the hatch lineup now mirroring its sedan equivalents.

While the Mirage hasn’t undergone exterior changes, Mitsubishi said the 2015 model has received technical refinement in the form of additional sound insulation to the rear floor areas, A-pillar, dash panel and front cowl top.

Redesigned engine mounts have reduced driveline noise transmission to the cabin, and the Japanese car-maker says 'loss-reduction technology' has resulted in a quieter engine.

New to the ES variants is a black interior, a shorter roof antenna and luggage area illumination.

Previous standard features are carried across and include air-conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming and voice control, steering wheel with audio and phone controls, AM/FM radio with USB and auxiliary port, two Isofix rear seat restraints and Hill Start Control in the CVT version.

The LS variants now come with cruise control and tinted glass, along with previous standard features such as 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, rear spoiler, higher grade seat trim, chrome-look interior accents, climate control and four-speaker sound system.

With six airbags, ESC, ABS and electronic brake force distribution the Mirage has a five-star ANCAP rating, and Mitsubishi’s Emergency Stop Signal, which activates hazard lights under hard braking is now standard range-wide.

The 57kW/100Nm 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine is carried over from the previous car and powers all variants.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia executive director of marketing Tony Principe said its light segment five-door hatch is a good value-for-money package.

“Mirage has been a great success story for Mitsubishi – its combination of great features, good looks, fuel efficiency, strong safety credentials and low running costs make it a very attractive car for value-conscious buyers,” he said.

“Using the same approach successfully applied to 2015 model year Lancer, ASX, Outlander and Pajero earlier this year, we’ve simplified the Mirage line-up and pricing structure, while adding new features and upgrading its appearance and overall refinement.”

Five exterior colours are available: White Mulberry, Cyber Blue, Red Planet and Pop Green. Premium paint adds $495.

The 2015 Mirage comes with Mitsubishi’s five-year/100,000km warranty, four-year capped-price servicing and roadside assistance.

The hatch joins the new sedan version of the Mirage, which was launched in July, starting at $14,990 for the manual ES and topping-out with the CVT LS at $17,490.

With a new reduced entry-level price, the Mitsubishi Mirage edges closer to Australia's cheapest new car – the $11,290 driveaway Proton S16.
