Subaru reveals Forester STI Sport special edition

IN WHAT IS possibly the last hurrah for the current generation Subaru Forester, the Japanese manufacturer has introduced an STI Sport version of the model Down Under with styling and dynamic tweaks priced from $48,640 plus on-road costs.

Based on the Forester 2.5i S AWD, the Forester STI Sport is bereft of any engine performance upgrades, running a stock 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol unit generating 136kW and 239Nm fed full-time to all four wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

In a fanciful use of the STI brand – that earned legendary status through motorsport – the special edition Forester is a far cry from past high-performance STis, most of which had double the power of “garden variety” models together with the necessary go-fast ancillary components such as Brembo brakes.

Therefore, the Forester STI Sport is pitched purely at buyers wanting a sportier looking model with AWD.

Available now for a limited time the mid-size SUV package is equipped with a range of “unique” styling elements and precision suspension tuning by Subaru Tecnica International (STI) – the team renowned for over a decade of World Rally Championship success.

With STI-tuned front and rear dampers complementing Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive system, the Forester STI Sport AWD is said to deliver elevated handling for a sharper, more responsive driving experience.

Subaru Australia says the STI retuned suspension enhances control, stability and balance, helping “enrich driving dynamics” and offering a “more spirited and engaging journey.”

The special edition model can be identified from the outside by its dark grey, high-lustre 18-inch alloy wheels, black front grille, Crystal Black side and rear garnishes, black door mirror caps, roof rails, fog light garnishes and front and rear under guards, along with the iconic STI badge.

On the inside, the model is defined by a Black & Bordeaux (red) colour scheme to the Nappa leather-accented seats, door trim, centre console and instrument panel. Facing the driver is an STI-branded instrument cluster and red stitching is applied on the steering wheel and instrument panel adding a sporty feel.

Subaru showed a more potent 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol Forester STI a couple of years ago at the Tokyo Motor Show, but that model has apparently slipped into oblivion, replaced by this more mainstream effort.

Subaru says the STI Sport AWD “continues the legacy of the Forester as an all-around performer, engineered for adventure and built to meet the diverse needs of Australian drivers”.

“With the STI Sport AWD special edition, we’re excited to offer a sportier option that enhances the driving experience while maintaining the Forester’s renowned versatility and reliability,” said Subaru Australia general manager Scott Lawrence.

“This limited-run edition offers a fresh take on a familiar favourite, providing a special opportunity for consumers to enjoy something truly distinctive.”

The model is available in Crystal White Pearl, Ice Silver Metallic, Magnetite Grey Metallic, Crystal Black Silica and Offshore Blue Metallic external paint colours.
