Subaru prices new for ’22 WRX

Eight variant WRX range starts from $44,990, $4000 more than outgoing entry point

11 Apr 2022

SUBARU Australia has revealed the pricing of its new 2022 WRX sedan and Sportwagon line-up. The fifth-generation range will start from $44,990 (plus on-road costs), which is $4000 more than the entry point to the outgoing range.

While more details and full specifications of the WRX model range will be announced closer to its launch in May, the pricing is set to include what Subaru says is a “completely revised and more responsive” 2.4-litre Boxer turbocharged petrol engine, which now delivers 202kW at 5600rpm (+5kW) and 350Nm from 2000 to 5200rpm (unchanged).

The WRX sedan line-up (from $44,990) is offered in three variants and with a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or Lineartronic continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The range includes the self-titled WRX (manual and auto), WRX RS, which replaces  the WRX Premium (manual or auto), and the flagship WRX tS variant (auto only).

As previously reported, there will be no STI variant offered in the fifth-gen WRX range.

The new WRX Sportswagon, which essentially supersedes the Levorg in Subaru’s line-up, is offered in three trim grades, all with an automatic transmission as standard. The entry WRX Sportswagon is priced from $49,990 (plus on-road costs), which is $6650 more than the entry point to the now-defunct Levorg range.

Subaru says its “Performance Transmission” CVT is newly developed and promises automatic downshift blipping control for “engaging performance”. The eight-step continuously variable unit offers “advanced shift logic”, which aims to better utilise the WRX’s broad torque spread and improve both response and flexibility.

Subaru has yet to announce 0-100km/h acceleration times, top speed, fuel economy or CO2 emissions for its local WRX range.

The Shibuya-based company has, however, revealed further equipment details for its soon-to-be-released WRX range, saying that both sedan and Sportswagon version will feature a portrait-oriented 11.6-inch central touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, D-shaped leather-bound steering wheel, sports bucket seats and, on automatic variants, the latest in Subaru’s EyeSight safety technologies.

Automatic WRX variants will receive, as standard, an array of driver-assist and safety technologies. including – but not limited to – adaptive cruise control, emergency lane keep assist, lane centring, pre-collision braking and throttle management, autonomous emergency steering, speed-sign recognition and intelligent speed limiter.

All versions will feature Subaru’s Drive Monitoring System with safety and convenience features including facial recognition, distraction warning and drowsiness warning.

Furthermore, flagship WRX tS sedan and Sportswagon variants will come equipped with Drive Mode Select with electronically-controlled adaptive dampers.

The fifth-gen WRX is built on Subaru’s Global Platform, which the firm says provides greater stability and direction control to “offer safer cornering at higher limits”. The new WRX body is approximately 14 per cent more rigid in front lateral ranges and 28 per cent more rigid in terms of its chassis’ torsional rigidity compared with the outgoing sedan.

“The WRX is iconic and legendary, for generations people have desired this car and new generation WRX takes its existing status to an entirely new level,” said Subaru Australia managing director Blair Read.

“Building on its reputation as an exhilarating rally-rich car, the Subaru engineers have delivered a new WRX with aggressive styling, more power, new technology, and (it) handles just as the driver intended.

“We're thrilled to offer (a wide) choice to Subaru customers within the all-new WRX range, with an aggressive, refined cult-classic Sedan and a sophisticated wolf in sheep's clothing Sportswagon both powered by a new 2.4-litre turbocharged, horizontally-opposed Boxer engine.

“WRX has been an icon for 30 years and we are confident the new generation WRX Sedan and Sportswagon will continue to exceed Subaru enthusiast's expectations.”
