Kia recalls Sportage

Recalled: Kia’s gen-two Sportage is under the microscope for a fault that can cause electronic systems failure.

Potential wiring fault prompts second-gen Kia Sportage recall

6 Jan 2017

KIA is recalling 531 second-generation Sportage models that were built between 2008 and 2009 to inspect for a manufacturing defect that has the potential to cause a stability system failure or engine fires.

The fault relates to the Hyundai Electronic Control Unit (HECU) that controls a number of vehicle systems including the electronic stability system (ESC).

A manufacturing defect may cause the wiring connector seal to allow the ingress of water and other contaminants which would cause corrosion and a short circuit. In some cases, the damage could lead to the failure of electronic systems or, in the worst case, a fire.

Owners are likely to be unaware of the problem, with an illuminated ESC warning light the only precursor to other symptoms, although the South Korean car-maker points out that the warning light will not illuminate in all cases.

Kia will contact the known owners of affected vehicles and customers can then book their vehicle into an approved service centre for inspection and repair work where necessary.

Alternatively, customers can visit the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) recalls website for a full list of the chassis numbers of impacted models.

The affected vehicles have chassis numbers falling between KNAJE552387484553 and KNAJE555587509785 but not all Sportages within that range will need to be recalled for inspection.
