Lexus recalls 250,000 vehicles

Ethanol alert: The Lexus GS is one of three Lexus models recalled due to possible fuel line corrosion in the US.

Toyota luxury brand announces fuel line recall in US

22 Jan 2009

LEXUS has recalled 214,500 vehicles in the US because of potential fuel hose leaks caused by ethanol fuels.

No vehicles are affected in Australia by the recall, which involves IS250/350, GS300/350 and LS460/460L vehicles built between 2006 and 2008.

Lexus said no actual fuel leaks had been reported, but a series of suspicious engine warning lights alerted it to the potential for a fuel pipe to corrode over time and leak. The problem is understood to have been related to the use of ethanol-blended fuels.

“It doesn’t affect any Australian cars,” Toyota Australia spokesman Mike Breen told GoAuto.

“All fuel rails were checked and there is no record of replacement due to corrosion-specific problems. It’s a condition that only appears to have affected cars in the US,” he said.

Lexus USA will advise owners of affected vehicles later this month, as part of the recall to be held in concert with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
