Mercedes takes global, local prestige sales crown amid boom for top German brands16 Jan 2017 By TERRY MARTIN - MERCEDES-BENZ has moved to the top of the prestige motor market worldwide for the first time in more than a decade and consolidated its stronghold in Australia as buyers flocked to all three leading German brands – BMW and Audi included – last year. - Both Mercedes and BMW broke through the two-million-unit ceiling for the first time last year, but it was the Stuttgart-based car-maker which finished the year in front with 2,083,888 sales (excluding vans and trucks and not including other brands in its stable), while its Bavarian arch-rival managed a still-impressive 2,003,359 new deliveries.
