Audi 100

C4 100

1 Jan 1992

NOTE: Audi changed from using numbers to an alphanumerical naming system for its model ranges after the release of the A8 and A4 in Europe during 1994. The C4-series A6 is a derivation of the C4-series Audi 100 that dates from 1991.

Audi toned down the previous 100’s slippery shape into something altogether less distinguished for the evolutionary C4 series, but it did hone the car’s strength, safety and driveability, aided by a widening of the platform.

The ageing five-cylinder units gave way to a smooth 2.8-litre V6 producing 128kW of power and 250Nm of torque.

Finally a four-speed automatic usurped the ancient three-speed gearbox, a five-speed option was retained and quattro four-wheel drive was introduced as an alternative to the regular front-wheel drive layout.

Like the car’s dynamic aptitude, equipment levels were high.

A handy Avant wagon joined the range in both drivetrain configurations from mid-1993, along with the return of a five-cylinder variant.

The high-performance, range-topping S4 featured a 169kW/350Nm 2.2-litre turbocharged “five pot” driving all four wheels. It sold in tiny numbers until the A6 facelift arrived.

From October '93 an entry level front-wheel drive 100 sedan was introduced. Powered by a 110kW/225Nm 2.6 V6, it boasted much the same gadgets but at a substantial price saving.
