Underneath the new grille and redesigned tail-lights lurked more powerful and economical engines – now an 85kW/244Nm 3.1-litre/188ci and a 101kW/282Nm 3.6/221 six-cylinder, and a 157kW/407Nm 5.0/“Mustang 302” V8.
On the safety front, the brakes were improved, larger tyres fitted, the now horizontal indicators were also reverse lights in the tail-lights and an external mirror was incorporated.
The standard three-speed manual’s first-gear was now synchromesh too. 79,290 XTs were manufactured.
