THINK high-performance Euro sedans and you end up mulling over acronyms and letters - AMG, M and RS – the three specialist performance offerings from Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi. There are, of course others, but for grown up professionals with children these cars help maintain the rage. They’ll happily doddle around town for every day chores but unleash them on the open road and you’re in for a furious, fun time. Mercedes-Benz’s latest AMG63, based on the revised E-class lineup, makes family motoring that much more exciting, and the latest revisions to steering and suspension only serve to sharpen up its act.

Family Tree: E-classThe current shape W211 model was launched in August 2002 with the W211 Estate appearing here in October 2003 with a carry over V6. The upgraded 200kW/350Nm 3.5-litre V6 arrived in the E350 and replaced the E320’s 165kW/315Nm V6. This same engine is used in the SLK Roadster. The E280, with its 170kW/300Nm 3.0-litre V6, arrived in October 2005 while there was also an E280CDi model, boasting 140kW/440Nm. The E-class platform also spawned the sporty four-door coupe, known simply as the CLS. The AMG 55 sedan and Estate employed a supercharged 5.5-litre V8 that developed 350kW/700Nm.
