Future models - BMW - 4 SeriesBMW to add M to 4 Series petrol, diesel modelsM Performance power upgrades to extend to 4 Series models, BMW saysGalleryClick to see larger images 17 Oct 2013 By BARRY PARK BMW Australia has let slip that it will soon launch performance-honed versions of its 4 Series coupe – in both petrol and diesel form. The changes include a version of its 225kW/400Nm 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine amped up to 250kW/458Nm, and up to 147kW/418Nm for its 135kW/380Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine. The extra performance is part of the rollout of M Performance packages across the BMW passenger car range that has already extended to the 5 Series and 6 Series ranges. BMW Australia product communications manager Scott Croaker confirmed to GoAuto that the M Performance packages for the 4 Series cars would include software flashes, more aerodynamic tweaks and even running mechanical changes including a larger intercooler for the diesel-engined 420d. The news follows the revelation that BMW will offer similar performance packages on its 5 Series and 6 Series cars sold in Australia. The tweaks on the single-turbo six-cylinder petrol engine lift its performance to the same level as the twin-turbo version that powers the BMW Z4 sDrive 35si convertible two-seat sports car and the 1 Series M performance-honed hatchback. While the power kits are not yet available, Mr Croaker said the add-ons could be retrofitted to vehicles already in owners’ driveways. Cosmetic changes include new front bumper with a carbon-look splitter, different side skirts covering the rockers, a spoiler on the boot lid and a different rear diffuser and bumper surround. The Australian kit is also expected to step the standard 19-inch M Sport wheels fitted to the 235i as standard up to a set of 20-inch hoops. Interior tweaks include a three-spoke steering wheel with in-built race functions, different front seats and a smattering of carbon fibre trim around the cabin. A power kit is available for the 428i, although BMW Australia is believed to be ruling this out for our market because of how close the car’s performance will match the range-topping 435i. However, while Mr Croaker was able to provide details about the power packs, the luxury car-maker could not confirm the kits’ arrival or pricing.
