First look: 5 Series gains mild makeover

Facelift: The Bimmer's "kidney" grille is wider and bolder.

BMW has taken the knife to its 5 Series

10 Jan 2007

BMW has given a mild facelift to its 5 Series sedan and Touring, which surfaced in Europe this week.

The new range goes on sale in March and is likely to be available in Australia in the second half of the year.

The external changes include an extra chromium strip on the bumper, wider kidney-shaped grille openings and new headlights that stretch further along the mudguards.

Interior quality has improved with a revised console, including a gearshift from the new X5. The controversial iDrive system has advanced with easier graphics and more intuitive bookmarks for radio stations.

The car will be available with a lane-departure warning system, improved adaptive cruise control and steering wheel paddle shifters.

Engines are expected to remain the same, with a modest performance boost for the 530d.
