Honda: next-gen Civic scores new 1.8 iVTEC

Si senor: Civic Si coupe debuted at February's Chicago motor show.

Next-generation Civic, due here in early 2006, to get a more 103kW 1.8 iVTEC mill

AS unauthorised images of the next-generation Civic circulate across the internet, Honda has confirmed its small car replacement will feature a new 1.8-litre iVTEC engine with more power and improved performance.

Honda claims the engine uses an "intelligent" VTEC variable valve timing system that switches the valve timing for maximum efficiency during start-up and acceleration, and delays intake valve closure timing during cruising or other low-load conditions for lower fuel consumption.

The 1798cc engine produces 103kW at 6300rpm and 174Nm at 4300rpm, uses a drive-by-wire throttle and is also claimed to be lighter, more compact and deliver fewer emissions.

The petrol-electric hybrid version will also be more efficient, with a revised electric motor providing the sole impetus for driving the front wheels at low speeds.

While the US-only Honda Civic Si coupe debuted at February's Chicago motor show, Honda previewed its eighth-generation Civic hatch at Geneva in March.

A near-production show car that will reach the showrooms early next year, this all-new Civic is wider and lower than the current model, and and designed to bring some sportiness back to the Civic nameplate, which Honda confirmed at the show would be built in two, three, four and five-door variants.
