Next-gen twin turbo V8 for Mercedes-AMG GT

Coming soon: the Mercedes-AMG GT, with its twin-turbo V8, will be out to steal Porsche’s 911 sales.

Mercedes-AMG GT to take on Porsche 911 with a new twin-turbo V8 powerplant

AMG’s next-generation twin-turbo V8 will power the soon-to-be-revealed Mercedes-AMG GT sportscar when it goes on sale locally next year.

Calling it a “quantum leap in technology”, Mercedes-AMG’s new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 will replace the retiring heavy-weight king of AMG powerplants – the naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8.

That engine powers the iconic SLS AMG Roadsters and Coupes which have now ended production, as well as the current-generation C-Class-based C63 AMG sedan, coupe and wagons.

Under the bonnet of the SLS AMG, the 6.2-litre V8 produces 420kW and 650Nm, while the new twin-turbo V8 in the AMG GT will pump out 375kW of power at 6250rpm and 650Nm of torque.

According to the official website for the AMG GT, the two turbo-chargers have been installed in the ‘V’ between the cylinder heads to make the engine more compact. Mercedes-AMG also says that know-how gained from motorsport was used in the development of the engine.

Lightweight forged pistons have been used, the cylinder walls have been coated with a nano material which reduces friction and a rigid crank case provides stability.

The engine also has a dry sump and the lack of oil pan means AMG was able to position the engine 55mm lower, which in turn brings the centre of gravity of the powerplant down and closer to the ground.

After going on sale four years ago, the SLS AMG Coupe and Roadster will be retired in 2014, allowing the Mercedes-AMG GT to take its place at the top of the Mercedes-AMG range.

The Mercedes-AMG GT will be smaller and less expensive than the SLS AMG, and the Porsche 911 and potentially the Jaguar F-Type Coupe are expected to be its main rivals.

The Mercedes-AMG GT will make its debut at the Paris Motor Show this year and go on sale in Australia in 2015.
