Confusingly named Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology makes its European debut

MERCEDES-BENZ has electrified its iconic G-Class (Geländewagen), bringing the anachronistic four-wheel drive somewhat quietly into the 21st century.

 

Badged as the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology, and not the EQG, the battery electric model retains the G-Class’ rugged ladder frame construction. It is powered by a motor at each wheel (for a total of four) providing a total system output of 432kW and 1164Nm.

 

According to Mercedes-Benz, the figures are sufficient to propel the electrified G-Class from standstill to 100km/h in just 4.7 seconds, on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 180km/h. The vehicle even has a sound generator dubbed G-Roar, to give it a V8-like bark.

 

Three on-road driving modes are offered – Comfort, Sport, and Individual – and two for off-road – Trail and Rock.

 

Battery capacity is listed at 116kWh, the lithium-ion pack shielded from off-road misfortune by a 26mm bash plate. Mercedes-Benz quotes a WLTP driving range of 473km. AC charging is handled via an 11kW cable, with DC fast-charging capacity offered at up to 200kW.

 

There are three charging programs available – Standard, Work, or Home.

 

Reduction gearing and automatically engaged “virtual differential locks” (essentially torque vectoring by brake) provide the electric G-Class with expected levels of off-road capability, the vehicle’s G-Turn and G-Steering technology allowing ultra-tight turns in a similar fashion.

 

Approach, ramp-over, and departure geometry is quoted at 32.0, 20.3, and 30.7 degrees respectively, the G 580 with EQ Technology further capable of driving up a 45-degree slope, or across a slope at up to 35 degrees.

 

Water fording is an impressive 850mm – or 150mm more than the ICE powered derivative.

 

Visually, the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology is characterised by bespoke A-pillar covers, a re-sculpted bonnet, rear-wheel air curtains, and a roof lip spoiler. Those features are joined by model-specific 18-inch five-twin-spoke alloy wheels in high gloss black.

 

Optioning the G-Class BEV with the AMG Line bundle will up the wheel diameter to 20 inches, while also adding stainless steel door sill covers and AMG-branded brake callipers. Alternatively, a Night Package tricks the vehicle out with black alloys, badging, lights, and wing mirror scalps.

 

Interior equipment reflects that found elsewhere in the G-Class range with dual 12.3-inch screens, 11.6-inch rear seat screens, keyless entry and start, leather upholstery, and a Burmester 3D premium audio bundle.

 

Pricing and Australian availability for the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology is yet to be announced. The currently offered Mercedes-AMG G63 is available from $363,560 plus on-road costs.
