MERCEDES-BENZ has announced two new variants to book-end the M-class SUV range in October.

At the bottom end is the ML280 CDI, whose entry-level turbo-diesel V6 offers 140kW/440Nm and returns claimed combined average fuel consumption of 9.4L/100km.

Priced at $77,900, the ML280 CDI represents a new entry-level price-point for the M-class range, which comprises the ML350 Luxury ($87,900), ML320 CDI Luxury ($90,900) and ML500 Luxury ($116,900).

At the other end of the line-up, AMG's ballistic new ML63 has also been confirmed for an October release, priced at a range-topping $159,900.

A spiritual successor to the previous-generation ML55 AMG, the ML63 AMG is powered by "the world's most powerful naturally aspirated eight cylinder engine in regular production". Its 6.3-litre V8 offers 375kW at 6800rpm and 630Nm of torque at a similarly revvy 5200rpm.

ML350 and 320 CDI pricing rises accordingly.

M-class is now also available with the option of a COMAND package, which comprises the COMAND APS, reversing camera and digital/analogue TV tuner. Valued at $11,450, it's available at $8500 for the ML280 CDI, ML350 and ML320 CDI - and at $2900 for the ML500, which already offers the COMAND APS as standard.

A Comfort package valued at $5390 is now also available for $4000 with ML280 CDI, ML350 and ML320 CDI. It comprises auto-dimming interior and driver's side mirrors, power-folding exterior mirrors, an electric glass sunroof and a luggage net.

Finally, Benz has announced new individual M-class options, including a reversing camera, Distronic cruise control, luxury front seats, Linguatronic voice control, a digital/analogue TV tuner, rear entertainment system, heated rear seats and 19-inch five-spoke AMG alloy wheels.
