The 2012 Australian International Motor Show has well and truly arrived with a slew of hot concepts and exciting new models.

A contender for car of the show has to be the gorgeous Lexus LF-LC Blue hybrid sportscar concept (above), but Lamborghini’s wicked Sesto Elemento supercar also looks like a winner. Kia’s stunning Quoris luxury car may not be coming to Australia, but it has certainly made an impact at the show.

Some crucial new models have had their first Australian showing, including the all-new Toyota Corolla and re-born Nissan Pulsar, as well as a number of popular SUVs such as the Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander, Mazda’s new-look CX-9 and Holden’s ute-based Colorado 7.

Sexy sportscars have also made a splash with the Jaguar F-Type, Mercedes-Benz AMG SLK55, Infiniti G37 and Aston Martin’s very limited One-77 supercar all on show.

THE 2012 Australian International Motor Show (AIMS) from October 18 will host at least two world premieres and multiple regional debuts, despite almost half the brands on sale in this market being unrepresented at the event.

Organisers have to contend with the fact that at least 22 brands – including crowd-pulling names such as Ferrari, Maserati, Audi, BMW, Renault and Volvo – have decided to focus their marketing spend elsewhere, citing reasons such as the cost of hosting a stand and the timing of new product releases.

However, the Sydney event will host a number of new model reveals, including Toyota’s new-generation Corolla and the hotly-anticipated Jaguar F-Type, which will be rushed straight to the show from its global debut in Paris in late September.

But arguably the stars of the show will be a pair of world debuts, from Lexus and Mazda respectively.

Lexus has already announced it will show a special, all-wheel-drive update of its sexy LF-LC coupe concept that debuted at the Detroit show this year, while Mazda is widely understood to be preparing a premiere of its own, although it remains tight-lipped on what it could be.

The Australian International Motor Show returns to Sydney this year as part of an arrangment between the Harbour city and Melbourne to take on hosting duties bienially.

The show will occupy the Convention and Exhibition Centre on Darling Harbour through late October, and should play host to numerous public debuts for cars Down Under.

Among those already confirmed are the all-new Peugeot 208 light car, which will revitalise the chic French brand in one of its key segments.

New premium brands Opel and Infiniti - owned by General Motors and Nissan respectively - will also display the arsenal of product with which they intend to attack the local market.

GoAuto will begin bringing you all the latest on the Sydney show as soon as more news emerges. Keep an eye out in the months and weeks leading up to its October commencement!
