Cupra expands PHEV push

Electrified Cupra Leon Ve hatch priced from $62,990 plus on-road costs

20 May 2026

CUPRA’s electrified line-up Down Under now includes the new Leon Ve plug-in hybrid hatch offering more than 120km of electric-only driving range and priced from $62,990 plus on-road costs.

Joining the refreshed Leon hatch range launched late last year, the new Leon Ve introduces Cupra’s second-generation plug-in hybrid technology to the local hatchback line-up offering a long-range electrified alternative for buyers not ready to commit to a full battery-electric vehicle.

The new model means every combustion-based Cupra nameplate now offers a plug-in hybrid variant in Australia spanning the Leon Hatch, Leon Sportstourer, Formentor, and Terramar.

Cupra Australia head of product Jeff Shafer said the Leon Ve reflects the next stage of the brand’s local electrification strategy.

“The Leon Ve perfectly captures what Cupra stands for – performance, design and electrification with emotion,” he said.

Fundamentally, the Leon Ve is a new-generation plug-in hybrid drivetrain combining a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 110kW/250Nm with an electric motor delivering 85kW/330Nm.

Combined system output stands at 150kW/350Nm, enough for a 0-100km/h sprint in 7.7 seconds.

A significantly larger 20kWh usable lithium-ion battery almost doubles the capacity of Cupra’s previous PHEV setup and delivers a claimed 123km of electric-only range (WLTP).

Official combined fuel consumption is rated at just 1.4L/100km.

Charging capability has also been substantially improved.

AC charging rises from 3.6kW to 11kW, while DC fast charging is now available for the first time on Cupra’s plug-in hybrid system, though exact charging speeds were not detailed.

Both Mode 2 and Mode 3 charging cables are included as standard.

The new system also adds adjustable regenerative braking settings via the infotainment system.

The Leon Ve inherits the broader Leon facelift upgrades, including Cupra’s updated shark-nose front-end design, full-width rear lighting and illuminated rear Cupra badge.

Standard specification includes 18-inch Garbi alloy wheels, independent rear suspension, Dinamica sports bucket seats, power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory, heated Cupra Supersport steering wheel, tri-zone climate control, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, and integrated satellite navigation.

Cupra says the Leon Ve reflects a growing industry shift toward viewing plug-in hybrids as a long-term ownership solution rather than merely a transitional technology.

With more than 100km of EV range, the Leon Ve theoretically allows many urban owners to complete most weekday driving without using petrol, while retaining the flexibility of hybrid touring.

Cupra says that proposition increasingly resonates as EV adoption remains uneven and charging infrastructure challenges persist.

The Leon Ve is available to order now, with first Australian showroom arrivals due in June.
