Price and spec increases for updated Ranger

Reversing camera, trailer brake controller now standard on more Ford Ranger variants

10 Nov 2022

FORD Australia has announced pricing and specification details for its ‘2023.5’ model year Ranger ute models, which will begin production from March 2023 when XLT and Sport variants receive an integrated trailer brake controller as standard and XL cab-chassis variants gain a rear-view camera kit.

Wildtrak variants score a new 20-inch wheel option with all-season tyres as part of the change, priced at $500.

The Touring Pack for XLT and Sport models adds a cargo management system and Raptor-style auxiliary switch bank from $1295 (up $395). The auxiliary switch bank is offered optionally on XLT cab-chassis variants for $250.

Across the range, Ford has raised pricing by between $250 and $1300. The Ranger XL single-cab chassis now starts from $36,180 (+$250) while the flagship Ranger Raptor double-cab pick up is now $86,790 (+$1300).

The Ranger Raptor is newly available with a powered roller shutter-style tonneau cover with plastic drop-in bed liner (in lieu of the standard spray-in bed liner) from $3500.

Prestige paint increases by $25 across the range to $700. All other option pricing is consistent with the launch line-up.

Mechanically, the Ranger line-up is unchanged with 2.0-litre single- and bi-turbo four-cylinder diesel, 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel and 3.0-litre V6 EcoBoost (turbo-petrol) engines available.

As previously, the Ranger XL is is offered with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine matched to a six-speed automatic, or a more powerful bi-turbo version of the same unit hooked up to a 10-speed auto.

Ranger XLS double-cab variants come exclusively with the bi-turbo 2.0-litre and 10AT combination, while XLT and Wildtrak models are offered with both the four-cylinder bi-turbo and 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6, both with the 10-speed automatic as standard.

As detailed at GoAuto previously, the 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel gives the Ranger 184kW of power at 3250rpm and 600Nm of torque from 1750-2250rpm. The bi-turbo four-cylinder makes 154kW at 3750rpm and 500Nm from a narrow 1750-2000rpm, while the single-turbo diesel debelops 125kW at 3500rpm and 405Nm between 1750-2500rpm.

Finally, the Ranger Raptor develops 292kW and 583Nm from its twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 displacing 3.0 litres. The Raptor is likewise offered as standard with Ford’s 10AT, meaning there is no manual gearbox offered in the Ford Ranger line-up.

Year-to-date figures show 4x2 variants of Ford’s Ranger rank in third place locally with 3207 unit sales (11.2 per cent segment share). The Pick Up / Cab Chassis 4x2 segment is currently dominated by the Toyota HiLux (14,622 units and a 50.9 per cent segment share) ahead of the Isuzu D-Max in distant second (3873 units and a 13.5 per cent segment share).

In the 4x4 ute segment, however, the Ranger ranks in second place behind Toyota’s HiLux with 34,536 unit sales (and a 21.2 per cent segment share) YTD versus 40,058 unit sales (and a 24.6 per cent segment share). Third place is currently held by the Mitsubishi Triton with 21,783 unit sales (and a 13.4 per cent segment share).
