Fire risks and improper panel installation lead latest car-maker call backs21 Aug 2018 By TUNG NGUYEN JEEP, Fiat, Ford, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen have called back a number of recent models for various faults published on the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission (ACCC) website.
Just two examples of Jeep’s 2018 all-wheel-drive Cherokee SUV have been recalled for a fault in the assembly of the front-right halfshaft that can lead to a loss of power or the vehicle being locked out of ‘Park’.
As for Fiat, 1847 model-year 2015-2018 500X small SUVs have been called in to fix a faulty rear seat latch, which could cause the second-row pews to unintentionally fold forward in the event of a collision.
The folding seat could cause injury to passengers, but children sitting in Isofix-mounted seats are especially at risk of harm.
Meanwhile, Ford has issued a call back of 49 examples of its EcoSport small SUV built between May 3 and June 10, 2017, for a fix of the front lower control arm.
Faulty welds in the componentry could cause the front wheel of the EcoSport to lock up as it hits the wheelhouse or fender, leading to a loss of steering control and forward motion.
Audi models affected in the latest recall include the A4, A5, A5 Cabriolet and Q5 mid-size SUV built from April 2011 to May 2015, totalling 14,435 units.
Each vehicle’s auxiliary heater element, found within the air-conditioning system, could fail as a result of overheating, leading to potential smoulder damage or, in extreme cases, a fire.
Similarly, five Mercedes-Benz C- and E-Class luxury sedans also face a fire risk stemming from incorrectly installed exhaust panelling.
The fault can be found in the left cutout for the exhaust system, which could come into contact with the high-temperature exhaust and catch fire.
Finally, 15,264 examples of Volkswagen’s previous-generation model year 2017-2018 Polo light hatch have been called in for a potentially faulty tow eye join.
In extreme cases, the tow eye could tear if being used, causing the towrope to slingshot and cause injury.
All manufacturers will contact affected owners where they will be directed to their nearest dealership for free-of-charge repair work when parts are available.
