Runflat debate runs flat

National tyre-makers body and suppliers opt out of run-flat tyre availability debate

24 Nov 2005

THE Australian Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) has refused to get involved in the debate over run-flat tyres, explaining to GoAuto that it was the responsibility of individual tyre manufacturers to resolve issues such as product availability and repairs.

ATMA executive director Greg Mackey said run-flat tyres, which as GoAuto reported last week have drawn criticism from motoring associations such as the RACV, were pretty much a "moveable feast".

"There are half a dozen different technologies out there and no uniformity between them," he said. "There may be glitches sometimes because it’s a new product ... and retailers have to be educated about fitment and advising clients and what the limitations are.

"But we felt we were going to confuse things by trying to pontificate about a range of new products." Several major tyre suppliers have refused to comment on issues relating to the supply, repair and general availability of the new technology.
