SLK scores a smooth six

MERCEDES-BENZ will launch an updated SLK range spearheaded by a 3.2-litre V6 model around July.

In addition to the availability of the V6 engine, the new model features a host of detail improvements.

The range-topping SLK320 is likely to retail for around $120,000, slightly more than the Tiptronic-equipped Porsche Boxster.

A six-speed manual transmission will be available for the first time in an Australian-spec Mercedes, but only in the SLK230 Kompressor. The SLK320 will come with a five-speed automatic that enables sequential-style shifts.

The SLK200 may be dropped from the range, which means the SLK's entry-level cost could increase by up to $10,000 - depending on the effect of the GST on new-car prices.

Powering the flagship SLK320 is the same turbine-smooth 3.2-litre V6 used in the E320 and CLK320. It generates 160kW at 5700rpm and 310Nm at 3000rpm, enough to propel the car from standstill to 100km/h in about 7 seconds, on its way to a maximum speed of over 240km/h.

The SLK230 uses essentially the same four-cylinder 2.3-litre supercharged unit as the current model. A reprofiled cylinder head and improved breathing help it deliver about 145kW - 3kW more than the current model - as well as reducing emissions.

The dash from rest to 100km/h should take under 8 seconds and maximum speed is quoted at 238km/h.

Mercedes-Benz is said to have uprated the SLK's dynamics to meet the challenge of the improved Porsche Boxster, new Honda S2000 and enhanced BMW Z3.

The suspension is lowered, with revised damper and spring rates and an uprated anti-roll bar to give it sportier handling characteristics.

But should things threaten to get out of hand, all SLKs come with the marque's electronic stability program (ESP) and traction control as standard.

The updated SLK is distinguishable by restyled front and rear bumpers and there's a new sill trim, body-coloured mouldings and door handles.

Revamped rear lights and side repeater indicators in the door mirrors help bring it in line with the recently revised E-class.

The exhaust pipe tips are polished stainless steel.

Inside, the carbon-look trim is replaced by milled aluminium and, in another first, a choice of eucalyptus or black bird's eye maple wood finishes.

Mercedes-Benz will launch the all-new flagship CL coupe range around the same time as the revised SLK makes its debut.

The super coupe will introduce new technology that includes Active Body Control (ABC). This feature will be offered as an optional extra in S-class models later in the year.

The entry-level CL500 will retail for $278,500, while the range-topping V12-powered CL600 is likely to cost around $350,000.
