A COMPLETELY new car, the third-generation Spider is a soft-top version of the Brera coupe.

And like the Brera, it is based on the new 159 sedan platform – complete with double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension systems - but features a 175mm-shorter wheelbase.

Two models arrived initially – the 2.2 JTS, using a 2.2-litre twin-cam four-cylinder engine producing 136kW and 230Nm, and a 3.2-litre V6, built by Holden and delivering 191kW and 322Nm.

Early cars featured only a six-speed manual gearbox, but from early 2007, the V6 scored a six-speed automatic transmission.

Along with seven airbags and seatbelt pretensioners, the two-seater roadster’s standard equipment list runs to switchable VDC stability control and ASR traction control, MSR torque modulation during down-changes, a hill-holder function, ABS anti-lock brakes and EBD brake-force distribution.

The Spider’s unique features include a power-operated folding fabric roof, rollover bars, a wind break and rear storage compartments, while standard equipment also includes dual-zone climate-control, cruise control, trip computer, multi-function display, foglights, 18-inch spoked alloy wheels and a six-speaker CD sound system.

At the beginning of 2011, a run-out special saw Alfa's 147kW, 1750cc turbo engine replace the 2.2 JTS under the Spider's bonnet and a fully-loaded specification including full leather upholstery adorn the interior.
