Alfa's gorgeous 176kW/300Nm 3.2-litre V6, six-speed manual GT coupe replaced and undercut the heavily torque-steered 156 GTA sedan by $10,000, yet offered similar performance and more equipment.
With similarly compromised steering and suspension, however, this powerful front-driver will be the last of its kind before a new breed of front/all-wheel drive performance Alfas begin to appear over coming years - notwithstanding the even-hotter, forthcoming GT GTA.
As the sports flagship for the Italian brand, its unique styling and benchmark performance make the GT much more than a two-door 156 – and well up for the challenge against the Nissan 350Z, Mazda RX-8, Chrysler Crossfire and BMW 3 Series coupe.
The donor car is actually the 156-based 147. Four-cylinder and turbo-diesel variants also exist abroad, but not for us… for now.
