Super TestCar reviews - Alfa Romeo - 33 - Boxer 16V QV 5dr hatchAlfa Romeo modelsUsed Rivals7 May 2003 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 5D HATCHBACK (1990-1992) VERY similar in spec to the Alfa with a 1781cc, four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels through a five-speed gearbox. The car has a smart, chunky appearance and outstanding handling. Air-conditioning, central locking and power steering are standard. MAZDA 323 ASTINA 5D HATCH (1991-1994) THIS Japanese contender lacks the flair and handling finesse of the Europeans but with an 1840cc, 16-valve, multi-point fuel-injected engine and the choice of five-speed manual or four-speed auto, offers competent high performance. Central locking and power steering are standard. MITSUBISHI CB LANCER 5D HATCHBACK (1990-1992) A POWERFUL 1.6-litre, twin cam, 16-valve engine giving 90kW is the highlight, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. Good handling, particularly on dirt, is a bonus. Well appointed with alloy wheels and power steering as standard. The hatch area contains a large luggage space. CITROEN BX 5D HATCHBACK (1989-1994) SOMETHING different. Impressive performance from a 1905cc, 16-valve engine driving the front wheels through a five-speed box. Handling is exceptional, with self-levelling suspension, and equipment is impressive - anti-lock brakes, air-conditioning, alarm system, alloy wheels, central locking, power steering and power windows. Servicing and parts can be expensive.
