Road TestCar reviews - Audi - A6 - 4.2 V8 sedanAudi modelsThe Car4 Apr 2001 The A6 4.2 quattro comes standard with a three-spoke Tiptronic steering wheel, which is replaced by a four-spoke multi-function steering wheel as part of the $9500 "A+ pack" Heated seats are separately available as an option The 4.2 quattro features a plethora of airbags, including front and side airbags for front-seat passengers, side airbags for the outboard rear seat passengers and the new SIDEGUARD head-level airbag system The SIDEGUARD bags are integrated into the left and right roof lining and when triggered they drop down to cover virtually the entire side window area, and stay inflated for five seconds in case it is a roll-over accident Pyrotechnic tensioners are standard equipment on all seatbelts The V8 engine employs a three-stage, variable-length air intake system made from magnesium and variable camshaft control The longest intake manifold is used at low revs to achieve higher torque, the medium length intake is used at middle range revs for the same reason. The shortest manifold is used at high revs to maximise power The engine has one variable camshaft control device per cylinder bank to vary camshaft timing in different speed ranges. Audi claims this results in lower untreated exhaust emissions, better quality idling and an improved torque curve Audi claims the 0-100km/h sprint can be achieved in 6.9 seconds while top speed is a governed 250km/h Extensive use of aluminium running gear has enabled unsprung weight to be reduced by 10 per cent, providing improved suspension tuneability and control Split-fold rear seat and a ski-hole with a through-load sack are standard, along with net seat-back pockets, five cupholders and four overhead grab handles. The trip computer, called the driver information system (DIS) by Audi, supplies information on outside temperature, average fuel consumption, faulty bulbs and so on. Two speed thresholds can be stored in the DIS memory and a warning signal sounded if exceeded Did you know?An alarm system and electronic immobiliser provide car security.
