Super TestCar reviews - Holden - Jackaroo - DL 5-dr wagonHolden modelsResearch Holden Used Rivals9 May 2003 MITSUBISHI PAJERO 4D WAGON (1989-1991) AVAILABLE in four-cylinder 2.6 litre petrol or 2.5-litre turbo diesel, both engines were underpowered for the weight of the vehicle. Five-speed manual transmission only. Strong, capable off-road performer. Cloth trim, metallic paint, limited slip diff and power steering standard. Diesel versions attract a price premium. TOYOTA 4 RUNNER 4D WAGON (1989-1996) DEVELOPED from the HiLux commercial range but has gradually gained its own identity. Four-cylinder, 2.4-litre carburettor engine is underpowered and lack of wheel travel hampers off-road ability. The 2.8-litre diesel version is very popular and holds its price well. Limited slip diff and power steering were standard. Diesel versions carry a price premium. LAND ROVER 3.5 4D WAGON (1985-1991) POWERED by the well proven 3.5-litre Rover V8, coupled to a five- speed manual transmission. Rather stark, in the traditional Land Rover style, and expensive when new. Power steering and radio/cassette player are standard. Rough and ready workhorse, designed when four-wheel drives worked the land, not the high street. NISSAN PATHFINDER 2D WAGON (1988-1992) ANOTHER development from a commercial vehicle, this time the Navara. Styled in California but handicapped by two doors and an underpowered four-cylinder, 2.4-litre carburettor engine. The best ride in its class due to coil spring suspension all round. Five-speed manual only at this stage.
