The centre position in row two is the only to use an inferior lap belt and go without a head restraint. While the trend with smaller four-wheel drives is toward a monocoque chassis construction, Patrol continues with a strong separate chassis designed for tough off-road work but which is less highly regarded for its performance in a crash. Having said that, independent studies have shown large vehicles such as the Patrol do actually protect their occupants quite well in the event of a collision with another vehicle, however, they also create a significantly higher risk of injury for other people.
