Super TestCar reviews - Peugeot - 306 - XT 5-dr hatchPeugeot modelsUsed Rivals25 Jun 2003 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 5D HATCHBACK (1994-1998) THE 306's main European rival doesn't have the Peugeot's fluid handling or gorgeous styling, but it is sturdier. Also a front-wheel driver, the VW's peppy 2.0-litre engine comes with five-speed manual or four-speed auto. Twin airbags, central locking and power steering/windows are included. SUBARU IMPREZA 5D HATCHBACK (1993-2000) Sassy styling and a very functional interior head a list of positives, mostly due to the Impreza's cut-down Liberty platform's refinement. Front-wheel drive, 16-valve, 1.8 engine with five-speed manual a four-speed auto is optional. Extras include central locking and power steering. There are also grippy 4WD models. MAZDA 323 5D HATCHBACK (1994-1998) A CLASS leader, the '94 Astina also has excellent build quality, peppy performance and impressive fuel economy from the 1.8-litre twin cam engine coupled to five-speed manual (or an optional four-speed auto) and stand-out style inside and out as feathers in its cap. Rear head and legroom is tight though. NISSAN N15 PULSAR SSS 5D HATCHBACK (1995-2000) A SMART little car and the fireball of the class with a gutsy 2.0-litre, DOHC, 16-valve engine. Well equipped with driver's airbag, anti-lock brakes, air-conditioning, power steering/ windows and a radio/cassette. Top value, and absolutely reliable to boot. Even the smaller 1.6s are fun to drive.
