Super TestCar reviews - Peugeot - 405 - Mi16 4-dr sedanPeugeot modelsUsed Rivals28 Jul 2003 BMW E30/E36 318i 4D SEDAN (1989-1998) A 1.8 SOHC four-cylinder engine drives the rear wheels for average performance but excellent handling and brakes. The all-new E36 range from early '91 greatly improved dynamics, space and desirability, although it wasn't as solidly built. SUBARU LIBERTY 4D SEDAN (1989-1998) THE 2.2-litre, flat-four "boxer" engine has four valves per cylinder and plenty of punch. Drive is to the front wheels via a five-speed manual or four-speed auto. All independent suspension gives good ride and handling. The second-generation model from '94 greatly improved appearance, refinement and driving pleasure. Go for the 4WD models if possible. ALFA ROMEO 75 4D SEDAN (1988-1992) FOR a pure driver’s car, nothing beats an Alfa. The 75 has a twin spark plug 2.0-litre engine driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox - no auto was available. Lively performance and exciting handling. Limited slip diff, power steering, central locking and power windows standard. Check carefully for rust. SAAB 9000 4D SEDAN (1990-1992) THE 9000 is a wonderful road car although expensive to repair. A 2.2-litre, twin cam, 16-valve engine drives the front wheels via a four-speed auto. Heaps of extras including air-conditioning, alloy wheels, cruise control, central locking and power front seats, mirrors, steering, sunroof and windows.
