Super TestCar reviews - Saab - 9000 - CD 4-dr sedanSaab modelsOverview25 Mar 1996 SAAB'S 9000 came about as a result of a joint venture with Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo. They all shared the front-wheel drive "Type 4" platform that, from 1985, sired the respective Croma, Thema and 164 alternatives. Saab's derivative intially arrived as the 9000 Turbo hatchback in 1986, and that was joined by the normally aspirated 9000 GLE 16 hatch a year later. Not much changed until a four-door three-box sedan debuted here in May 1990. A thorough revitalisation of the range in late 1991 saw the arrival of the facelifted Series II 9000 cars, featuring new engines and improved dynamics. It was at this time that the CD sedan featured here was released. The 9000 lived on until the General Motors Opel Vectra-based 9-5 sedan and wagon arrived here in 1998...
