Super TestCar reviews - Suzuki - Swift - GTi 3-dr hatchSuzuki modelsOverview11 Feb 1989 SUZUKI first unleashed its Swift GTi quite unexpectedly during the first generation SA series' reign in 1986. That first model went like a scalded rabbit thanks to its sub-900kg weight and healthy 74kW from just 1.3 litres. And though it wasn't the last word in refinement or sophistication, we didn't mind because it was fun when such a word was foreign in most affordable small cars. Happily Suzuki not only stuck with the formula for the second-generation SF model, it improved it in the areas of comfort, handling and braking. Subsequently the Swift GTi Mk2 cornered a small but enthusiastic market for the duration of the 1990s, meeting no real rivals during that time. That Suzuki tried (in vain) to resurrect the spirit of the Swift GTi with 2003's lacklustre Ignis Sport speaks volumes of the fun little Swift runabout that could...
