Not a combination of words likely to ignite a petrol-head’s desire. But to overlook this car on those grounds would be foolish as we reckon it’s the best Corolla on sale today, and one that elevates the nameplate from transport appliance to something altogether more interesting. Not only that, but borrowing the petrol-electric drivetrain from a Prius injects a smoothness, refinement and verve to the ubiquitous Toyota hatchback that makes it feel positively premium. And since Toyota handed responsibility for Prius styling to someone who should have gone to SpecSavers, the Corolla could be the less cringe-worthy hybrid hatchback option.
