Super TestCar reviews - Volvo - XC90 - 5-dr wagon rangeVolvo modelsOverviewAdding V8 and turbo-diesel engines to the XC90 range has kept Volvo's big SUV fresh19 Sep 2006 By LUC BRITTEN A purpose-built and designed, all-new V8 is an expensive undertaking for any car company. Volvo has shown how seriously it takes its XC90 model by doing just that in the first major update for its successful SUV. Delivering V8 performance for the first time in any Volvo, the Yamaha-built engine is a nice fit in the big, quite bulky XC90. It brings refinement, as well as extra performance to give the company formidable armament for tackling the tough prestige SUV market. Additionally, the seven-seat XC90 also offers the option of a thrifty, torquey five-cylinder turbo-diesel that slots neatly into a segment where high-tech oil-burners are rife. It could safely be said that Volvo now covers all the important large SUV bases.
