Built on the LB Lancer sedan platform, the LB Liftback gained a swoopy new hatchback coupe body, a bigger 60kW 1.6L engine and sports instrumentation.

Although it was not the dynamic equal of the bar-raising Honda Accord, the Lancer hatchback received a warm sales reception.
