Future models - Mitsubishi - Lancer - Evo IX wagon

First look: Evo wagons ho!

Not a dirty word: Wagon version of Lancer Evo IX packs the same 206kW in manual guise.

Fast families rejoice! Mitsubishi has revealed a wagon version of the Lancer Evo IX

12 Sep 2005

A keen to be seen Mitsubishi has just announced a new wagon version of its Lancer Evolution IX high-performance 4WD sedan.

Available in both manual six-speed (GT) and five-speed automatic (GT-A) form, the Evo IX wagon uses two stages of tune to suit the characteristics of the transmissions.

The manual-transmission GT engine produces 206kW at 6500rpm and 392Nm at 3000rpm, while the GT-A, with a smaller turbocharger, is slightly less ambitious with 200kW at 6500rpm and 343Nm at 3000rpm.

The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder 16-valve intercooled and turbocharged DOHC engine drives through the manual or auto gearboxes to a full-time 4WD system incorporating Mitsubishi’s active centre differential to – in the manual GT - a mechanical limited-slip rear differential.

The wheels are 17 x 8JJ Enkei alloys finished in bright silver rather than dark grey and wearing the same 235/45R17 tyres fitted to the evolution IX sedan.

The evo is given an extensive structural toughening up to create what Mitsubishi says is "a lightweight and very stiff station wagon body". The massive tailgate spoiler is from the Lancer Wagon Ralliart, while an aluminium bonnet helps reduce weight.

The interior features modified (for easier access) Evo IX Recaro front seats and a Momo steering wheel as well as alloy accelerator, brake and clutch pedals.

The Lancer Evolution Wagon is to be produced in a limited run of 2,500 (GT and GT-A combined total), with production due to cease at the end of December this year.
